The Story
The riveting true story of grave corruption at the heart of one of the most explosive DEA missions of his career.
Three years after undercover agent Robert Mazur infiltrated Pablo Escobar’s Medellín drug cartel, he reemerged, a half-million-dollar bounty still on his head, with a new identity for a risky new sting. He was now Robert Baldasare, money launderer and president of an international trade finance company. Deployed to Panama, Mazur worked, traveled, partied, and washed millions with Central America’s criminal elite. Partnered with a young superstar DEA task force agent, Mazur slipped effortlessly into Colombia’s notorious Cali drug cartel. But as his underworld reputation skyrocketed, the operation started going dangerously off the rails.
On US soil, drug money in route to Mazur was seized. He started to notice an unsettling shift in the cartel’s inner circle. Contacts were being assassinated, and Mazur was being tailed. His identity had been compromised. Refusing to acknowledge the threats ahead, Mazur was obsessed with seeing the mission through to its treacherous end: expose Cali cartel leaders, find out who betrayed him, and escape with his life.
The Inspiration to share
‘As was the case with THE INFILTRATOR, it wasn’t until I shared THE BETRAYAL story with someone recognized globally as a uniquely creative and talented professional, that I realized the immense power of this story. His reaction inspired me to share THE BETRAYAL with the world.’
ROBERT MAZUR
The answer came after Robert Mazur spent months working closely on THE INFILTRATOR film with Emmy, Tony, and Golden Globe best actor award recipient Bryan Cranston. Over several years, a mutual friendship and respect developed between Mazur and Cranston, which led to candid exchanges about the depth of THE BETRAYAL story. After reviewing Mazur’s initial treatment of this new book, Cranston saw it as an exciting true story that, when fictionalized by a gifted director and screenwriter, could offer the platform for a blockbuster sequel to THE INFILTRATOR film. Cranston’s enthusiasm for the story motivated Mazur to obtain and analyze documents, interview witnesses, and commit years to writing THE BETRAYAL story. Publishing companies that reviewed THE BETRAYAL agreed with Cranston, and have brought the story to readers in North America and Europe.
Cranston went on to open doors for the development of a film based on THE BETRAYAL. He organized a meeting with Amazon Studio executives, at which he, Mazur, director Brad Furman, and others pitched THE BETRAYAL as a sequel to THE INFILTRATOR film. On the spot, they committed to purchase the film rights of the book, and to fund an adaptation of THE BETRAYAL book into a film, starring Bryan Cranston.
During a video recorded message by Bryan Cranston, inviting the public to attend one of Robert Mazur’s book signings, Cranston reveals that he will be starring in the film adaptation of THE BETRAYAL.
